I am sure that you wonder: "What is a ceilidh?"
You are lucky, I'm here to answer!! ;-)
A Ceilidh is very famous in Scotland. This word comes from celtic culture.
A Ceilidh is a kind of Fest Noz in Brittany in France. People are gathered for dancing on traditional country songs.
The ceilidh band plays some scottish songs with ou without bagpipes. You do not need any experience for dancing because just before the beginning of each song the band explains how to dance. I have to admit that sometimes it is not so easy to understand what we have to do...consequently, I am often lost but it is quite funny because I am not alone.
I have been in few ceilidhs and I like it even if I don't like dancing because I am always lost. The atmoshpere is unique and people enjoy themselves in dancing or drinking a pint of beer.
Contrary to Fest Noz in Brittany, it is not only old people who dance but a lot of young people.
For ceilidh, every scottish people who has a kilt wears it. So you can imagine what we can see when the dance is quite fast and the kilt lifts....So now, I am sure that scottish people do not wear anything under kilts ;-)
